Phoebe Bridgers is back with a brand new song, and it's not off her almost-brand-new album, Lost Weekend!
"On Video" is from Primetime, the new A24 film that finds Bridgers in a starring role. The film is dark, and follows To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen, portrayed by the most popular man in Hollywood, Robert Pattinson.
Bridgers' role is that of a "decoy," which is someone who pretends to be underage to catch child predators. It's a heavy role, but Bridgers does a great job.
Now, back to the song!
"On Video" is epic. This is Bridgers pumping up the volume and channeling a side of herself that I personally have always loved, but which she doesn't bring out very often. If you listen to some of her other tracks, like "Bobby" or "I Know the End," you'll know what I mean.
Bridgers made "On Video" specifically for Primetime. The song captures the dark nature of the film perfectly, and Bridgers' lyrics are some of her best:
"Birthday girl /
I've got it all /
On video /
On video /
I saw you making angels in the snow /
They sing so loud, you can't hear yourself /
Fragile like a child at the fair /
You took too much but it was not enough /
You had us all scared"
In the context of the film, those are some seriously dark lyrics. But if you're listening to the music on its own, this is some of Bridgers' most anthemic material. The feeling is through the roof, as are the guitars.
Leave it to Bridgers to make one of her most epic songs as the driving song on a film soundtrack about To Catch a Predator.
"On Video" is a great reminder that Bridgers can really rock. It also proves that she really is one of the great songwriters of our generation. Check it out — you'll be glad you did.
